From Food-Tech Start-Up to Scale-Up

Challenge

Based on an idea to produce baby food using low processing techniques  — that is, with lower levels of processing (finely chopped instead of puréed) and at lower temperatures — the two individuals behind the concept believed this would result in a product with fewer harmful by-products and higher nutritional content. The assigment was to develop the product, initiate sales, and attract an investor.

Assignment

In the role as CEO, a comprehensive business plan was developed together with the two founders. The first step was to secure the right competence for the start-up, which led to the recruitment of a new chairman with solid experience in innovation and production. The team was further strengthened with expertise in tech and nutrition through additional hires.

As a team, we developed recipes, made test runs of products, and analyzed the levels of by-products compared to existing baby food on the market. The results showed lower levels of potentially harmful by-products on our recepies and methods of production.

A third-party manufacturer was identified, and the brand, logo, and overall brand image were created.

The company was approved as a local supplier by a Swedish retail chain, and sales began. In-store demos were conducted, providing valuable customer feedback. With a product on the shelf and paying customers, the company successfully brought in an investor to support scaling efforts.

Result

The objectives — to develop a product, sell it to a customer, and bring in an investor — were all successfully accomplished. It was a challenging journey, but incredibly educational in learning to never give up and to constantly find new paths. Overall, it was an energizing experience to create something from scratch.
